WHY UPGRADE YOUR CONSUMER UNIT?

Your consumer unit (fuse board) is the heart of your property's electrical system. An outdated or unsafe board puts your home and family at risk. Modern consumer units provide essential protection against electric shock, fire hazards, and power surges.

  • RCD PROTECTION

Residual Current Devices cut power in milliseconds if a fault is detected, preventing electric shock.

  • SURGE PROTECTION

Protects your valuable electronics and appliances from voltage spikes and lightning strikes.

  • FULL CERTIFICATION

Every installation comes with a BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate for your records.

  • MINIMAL DISRUPTION

Most upgrades completed within a single day with power restored as quickly as possible.

IS IT TIME FOR A NEW FUSE BOARD?

If your consumer unit is over 10 years old, or if you notice any of these warning signs, it is time to consider an upgrade. Do not wait for a problem to occur.

  • TRIPPING CIRCUITS

Frequent tripping indicates overloaded circuits or a failing board that cannot handle modern demands.

  • NO RCD PROTECTION

Older boards lack RCDs — a critical safety feature now required by regulations for all circuits.

  • BURNING SMELL OR SCORCHING

Discolouration, burning smells, or melted components are serious fire hazards requiring immediate attention.

  • PLASTIC ENCLOSURE

Old plastic fuse boards are no longer compliant. Modern metal-clad units are mandatory for safety.

CONSUMER UNIT FAQ

How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?
Most standard upgrades are completed within 1 day, power may be on after a few hours but could go back off for further testing. Larger properties or dual-board installations may take a full day. I always aim to restore power as quickly as possible.
Will I be without power during the upgrade?
Yes, power will need to be isolated during the installation. However, I work efficiently to minimise downtime and can often have power restored within a few hours.
Do I need to upgrade if my fuse board still works?
Old fuse boards may still function but lack critical safety features like RCD protection. Regulations now require RCDs on all circuits, and insurance companies may refuse claims if your board is not up to standard.
What is the difference between RCD and RCBO?
An RCD protects a group of circuits — if it trips, multiple circuits lose power. An RCBO protects individual circuits, so only the faulty circuit trips while the rest stay on. RCBOs offer superior protection and convenience.
Do you provide certification?
Absolutely. Every consumer unit upgrade comes with a full BS 7671 Electrical Installation Certificate and a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate where required. These are essential for insurance and property sales.
